Radical Small Group Kit, David Platte – Session 2 – 9/4/2018

Matthew 6:19-21 English Standard Version (ESV) – Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 19:16-22 English Standard Version (ESV) – The Rich Young Man

16 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20 The young man said to him, “All these I have kept. What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

Warm Up:  Welcomed the PAX, received some #mumblechatter about the latest change to the living room seating arrangement.  PAX scrambled for the premium recliner chairs.  Charlie Brown went scurrying back to his vehicle to try and find a lost cell phone….. he found it.  Time arrived and YHC gave a quick review of last week’s session.

The Thang:

  • Watched Session 2 DVD video message from Pastor David Platte
  • YHC realized about ten minutes into the video that the handout for notetaking was for session 3 rather than session 2 that we were watching.  Oh well.  CANC’d the handout and continued.
  • Lesson touched on a number of themes…. grace, materialism, importance of heart change before deeds/works, and A Radical Approach, A Radical Affection, A Radical Command
  • We discussed the problem with dismissing Jesus’ commands by saying it is enough to just “be willing” versus actually doing what is asked.
  • Also discussed aspects of the “Rich Young Ruler” interaction with Jesus from the related scriptures and the five different commands Jesus gave the rich young ruler:  1. Go, 2. Sell, 3. Give, 4. Come, 5. Follow Me
  • PAX were challenged to spend some time in prayer this week asking Jesus “What do you want me to give away?”

COT:  Nine PAX present. Prayer requests:

  • Charlie Brown: Prayers for BRR team’s safety
  • King Pen:  Upcoming medical appointment
  • Dirty Bomb:  loving communication with spouses and marriages
  • Early Bird:  Starting new job
  • Other PAX:  Unspoken

Moleskin:  As followers of Christ, we do not consider options.  We obey.  Jesus gives commands, not considerations.
