Blast Off 2/19/2021

When YHC agreed to Q today’s BlastOff several weeks ago, little did I know that we would need a boat! After nearly 2 weeks of rain and drizzle, 4 PAX (including 1 FNG) made up their minds to be HIM and embrace the suck this fine, drizzly, cold morning. RedBox was first on scene and after assessing the AO, he decided to plant the flag in a different location than is customary for Boyd Lee Park…our normal start point looked like a pond. Needless to say, after I welcomed the FNG and gave the disclaimer, we were off. Here’s how things progressed (digressed…?):

Warm Up

  • High Knees – 30 sec AMRAP
  • Good Mornings – IC
  • Michael Phelps – IC
  • Don Quixote – IC

Thang

At this point YHC’s intention was to Indian Run around the track, but due to the sideways cold rain…YHC decided to modify and straight to the shelter we ran (waded…)

  • Step Ups x 15 OYO
  • Super Step Ups x 15 OYO
  • Dips x 15 IC
  • Mountain Climbers x 15 IC
  • Flutter Kicks x 15 IC
  • Box Cutters x 15 IC
  • Dolly’s x 15 IC

The rain tapered off a little during our time under the shelter … so off we moseyed to the traffic circle (park entrance) where we performed 10 Merkins on the curb before moseying back to the shelter, splish-splashing all the way… Upon our return to the shelter. YHC looked at his watch and realized that only 15 minutes of the 45 had gone by. Time to modify the wienke! How to add time to the workout…think…think… Aha! Let’s do a little PAX choice:

  • Derkins x 10 IC
  • Sit-Down Squats x 10 IC
  • High Knees AMRAP x 30 sec

Knowing full well that we had some time to make up, and that we need to do at least a little running…we moseyed to the upper traffic circle where we did some Plank Jacks before returning to the shelter. Upon our return we completed the same exercises as before, but in reverse order starting with Dolly’s and ending with Step Ups. Next up on our tour of Boyd Lee Swamp…er…I mean Park…was a mosey around the 1/2 mile track where we could have used hip waders at a couple of points before ending up at our Start Point. A quick look at the personal timing device confirmed that we still had time to burn…so time to modify again! Here’s how we ended things:

  • Sprints up and down the length of the parking lot (only 1 section!) x 2
  • Backward mosey up and down the length of the parking lot x 2
  • Slow mosey up and down the length of the parking lot x 2

Finally, the clock struck 0615 and we finished things up with the COT. It was at this point that we bestowed the FNG with a new name: Ken Burns (Welcome!…Please come back!).

Moleskin

It seems that this past year has been nothing but constant change. Change from what was considered normal to what should be abnormal behavior…but is now considered normal (social distancing, masks, fear of people, fear of an invisible contagion, distrust of your neighbor, working from home, etc.). All this serves to remind me just how precious it is for men (and women too) to get together and actually interact with one another. F3 may not be the “thing” for everyone, but is is a welcome return to “normalcy” where we can share in Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith with other HIM.
