After taking a week to fellowship and focus on Hurricane Andrew recovery, we jumped back into Joshua. The crowd was slightly smaller, no doubt that some brothers were resting sore backs after slinging sandbags at Cypress Glen. The disclaimer was given at 1900 and we got to it.

THE THANG

Read Joshua 7-8

After God’s overwhelming victory at Jericho, one of the Israelites (Achan) disobeyed God and took some of the valuables God said to leave alone. Joshua did not know this. The next battle was on the city of Ai. The Israelites were feeling a bit cocky and went into battle thinking it would be a cakewalk. Instead, they were defeated and lost 36 of their own. Joshua had a 1-on-1 with God and started talking like a Surrender Monkey. God let him know quickly the defeat was not about him, but that one of the Israelites had been unfaithful. God was disappointed in the lack of obedience and faith of the people. Joshua returned to camp and Achan confessed to taking the valuables. Achan was stoned to death by the Israelites. The then consecrated themselves and returned to Ai victorious.

There are many valuable talking points to this scripture:

  • God’s victories are his victories
  • The results of God’s victories belong to him
  • Our sin affects many other people around us
  • God wants us to treasure the lessons and experiences where he previously was at work
