YHC woke up today very excited about the first 3rd F gathering of the fall. It had been an eventful summer with my ALS diagnosis and the study on Joshua was going to be a welcome change. Lots of announcements on the twitter machine had been circulated and there was speculation that the crowd at the Smurf House would be rather large. A lively pax posted up including 2 FNGs. The clock struck 1900, the disclaimer was given, and we got down to business!

WARM UP

Some quick facts about Joshua:

  • He was born a slave in Egypt
  • He witnessed the 10 plagues, Red Sea crossing, and destruction of the Egyptian army
  • He wandered in the wilderness 40 years and witnessed the destruction of those who rebelled against God
  • Of the 12 sent to scout the promised land by Moses, only Joshua and Caleb brought a faithful report of God’s goodness
  • He ate manna followed a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire for 40 years
  • Moses chose him early to be his right-hand man
  • Joshua is the Old Testament word for the Hebrew name meaning “Jehovah saves.” Jesus is the New Testament word for the Greek translation of “Jehovah saves”.

THE THANG

Read Joshua 1

Joshua was charged by God to follow Moses as leader of the Israelites and lead them into the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. God promised them land, victory, prosperity, success, and that He would always be there. He also commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous, lead the people, obey the Law and do not turn from it, and meditate on the Law.

As men, we are often called to great tasks in our homes, work, communities, and families. God commands us to be strong and courageous, be a leader among others, obey his Word at all times, and mediate on his Word. As Joshua illustrates, God “will never leave you nor forsake you” when we obey his commands.

We closed out by discussing which of the five F3 leadership characteristics were evident in Joshua 1

  • CANDOR: telling the hard truth.
  • COMMITMENT: unwavering loyalty and determination to both Mission and the well being of Community.
  • COMPETENCE: the ability to perform Mission-essential Tasks.
  • CONTENTMENT: stability of emotion engendered by the consistent pursuit of joy over happiness.
  • COURAGE: the setting aside of fear to turn hardship into grace.

Questions to consider over the next week:

  • What challenging task do you face in the near future?
  • How has this passage prepared you to accomplish great things for God?
